What Is Acoustic Felt?

Apr. 21, 2021

The most effective soundproofing material depends on where you want to soundproof and what noise you want to soundproof. How do you use the space and how does the noise affect your use? How to soundproof a music room is a different process to soundproofing a home office.

Two types of soundproofing

First, a disclaimer: you can't fully soundproof a room as long as there is air. Air travels everywhere and so does sound, because sound travels through air.

There are two types of sound insulation.

Noise reduction, which prevents sound from entering the space. Noise reduction will help to keep your space free from outside noise (e.g. weather, outdoor conversations and traffic).

Sound absorption, which stops the echoes and reverberations of sounds already in the space.

Acoustic Felts

Use the following two types of sound insulation.

Identifying the weakest areas where sound will enter and treating them. Sound waves, like water, will travel along the easiest path, so block them first.

Isolate the problem area. Sometimes it is easier to deal with the sound source before it reaches the space you want to soundproof.

When it comes to sound absorption, few materials offer the versatility, practicality and performance of sound mats.

Sound travels in three dimensions and bounces off walls, ceilings and floors when uncontrolled. Hard surfaces tend to extend the coverage of sound, creating distracting echoes and reverberations, while certain materials such as acoustic felts can help absorb sound.

The great advantage of felt, unlike other acoustic treatments, is that it can be applied to every surface in a given room.

This means that even if you refuse to cover an exposed brick wall with wall panels, it does not mean that you are doomed to experience constant reverberation.

There is a felt solution for your floors and ceilings that will help to reduce sound and allow you to love your space more than ever before.

What is acoustic felt?

Acoustic felts describe a variety of materials that consist of compressed fibres of varying thickness, density and composition.

The fibrous nature of felt creates air pockets in the material, allowing sound to be absorbed with a minimum NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) rating of 0.45.

Due to its versatility and advanced manufacturing process it often has a robust surface on which it can be cut or printed to reveal an incredible design to fit any space.

Applications for acoustic felts

Start with the floor - acoustic felts can be used as a backing for carpets and have nearly twice the noise reduction capacity of regular carpets. Acoustical felt are also very breathable and can be easily cleaned and moisture controlled.

Deco Sound PET Acoustic Felt wall panels are functional art, reducing noise to create acoustic privacy in a workspace, also decorate with eco colours, in the same way Deco sound PET acoustic wall panels encourage and inspiring workers to create tangible solutions for the works.

The art of acoustics

If you only want to cover a small part of a wall, then an acoustic art project may be the right choice for you.

Moving to the ceiling, felt is a common material used as recessed ceiling tiles, suspended ceiling baffles or even sound clouds.

Acoustic solutions need to look as good as they sound and have a perceived versatility in terms of print, shape, cleanability and sustainability - in fact there is hardly any material that can better mitigate sound and fit into your space.
